This complete overhaul of a narrow dark terrace house in the harbourside Sydney suburb of Double Bay has resulted in an intimate jewel box of a family home. Key challenges on the long narrow site included managing natural light and achieving generous communal interior spaces whilst minimising the impact on neighbouring properties.

The original facade was retained, with the rest of the house completely demolished. The new design maximises natural light and cross ventilation to all spaces by north-facing clerestory windows along the length of the long building.

Relief is then given to the long site by introducing a void over the central kitchen/dining area. A bridge then hangs over this void to allow the most public area of the house to be continually enjoyed as you circulate on both floors. The width of the site is maximised also by fully opening up to a landscaped side passage blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor and benefitting from the long Sydney summers.
